In January of 2007 a generous grant from the Riverside Community Health Foundation allowed Inland Agency to launch a new program that provides breast cancer screening to low-income women who are 39 or younger with breast health concerns (women 40 and older are served through the Desert Sierra Regional Contractors program). In April of 2007 the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation provided additional grant funding to expand the program.
The women who have been screened have described the experience as “life-saving”. The youngest client to date is a 16-year-old high school student who discovered a lump in her breast. Fortunately her screening revealed a benign mass, and she is now enjoying a normal teenage life without fear of cancer. Another client, who was referred to a surgeon for further testing, said the stress she and her husband were experiencing was so extreme neither of them could sleep. When she learned she had an appointment with a surgeon she was so grateful she broke down in tears.

This client told us: “I am very grateful for this program, if I had not found you I don’t know what I would have done. I guess God put you in my path. It just came from heaven and I am so grateful. I was so desperate to find something because I have an eight year old daughter and just the thought of not being here for her was frightening.”
The Women’s Health Initiative is funded through grants from the Riverside Community Health Foundation, the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation, the Betty L. Hutton Foundation and through our “Shop to Stop Breast Cancer” event.
