"Exploding Myths"

by Tanya Hernandez, Program Director

During PALS (Promoting Adolescent Life Skills) presentations students are expressing a great deal of interest. Students are engaged during the conversations and have many great questions.  They are feeling comfortable with me, even calling out “Hi Mrs. Tanya” during passing periods. This definitely brings a smile to my face.

As we were discussing birth control methods, a student confidently told me that he cracked an egg on his penis before sex. I took that as a great opportunity to discuss myths vs. facts. I made it clear to the class that egg yolk was NOT a birth control method. We all had fun, students laughed and learned at the same time.

While discussing Anatomy & Physiology, I asked the class ”Can a girl get pregnant if the couple uses withdrawal as a birth control method?" Some of the students had no idea what “withdrawal” meant.  I explained it as withdrawal is when the male pulls out of his partner before ejaculation. A young lady raised her hand and said ”I still don’t get it, what is he pulling out?" I had to refocus and explain the method step by step.  This made me appreciate the innocence some teens still have.
