Adelanto Community Tool Box

The Community Tool Box offers a variety of programs that help  participants through educating, health promotion, and advocacy.  Last year Martin Lara, our Community Coordinator, was named “Person of the Year/Spirit of Freedom” by the Daily Press here in the high desert.  He is a very giving person who deeply cares about his community and wants to make a positive change. 

One of the positive changes Martin brought to the Tool Box is our weekly food distribution, which began as a volunteer effort on Martin’s part.  It has grown into a regular part of our program, and we are now helping over 100 people per week.  Last year we provided groceries to 3,015 people. 

We have 25 students who come in for our “homework club” every Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday.  When they are done with their homework they have the opportunity to earn five “dollars” for each day they come in.  We have a store where they can use their “Community Tool Box dollars” to purchase items they like. 

To give an example of the impact the Tool Box has on the community, we would like to share Nancy’s story.  Nancy has been volunteering at the Community Tool Box for the past three years.  She first started participating in our Por La Vida trainings and later became a Consejera (lay teacher).  Nancy took (more)
